Sony's new Bravia line offers access to Audio Description (AD) for the Blind

People who are partially blind or blind can tank Sony for their initiative to include AD into their HDTV sets. AD or Audio Description "is an additional narrative soundtrack for blind or partially sighted people. During gaps in dialog, a voice explains visual plot points, which enable the visually impaired to get a better feel for what is going on during the show." With AD being a standard in the new 1080p sets, the Integrated Digital Television (IDTV) feature will bypass the need for decoder.

We are all used to seeing and using subtitles on TV, but what many people don't know is that the technology exists to make a similarly useful service available for the 30 million or so visually impaired people we have in Europe," says Andreas Ditter, vice president of Sony TV Operations Europe.
Currently audio description is available on a variety of television programmes throughout the UK and Europe. Now that all Bravia LCD's will be equipped with Integrated Digital Television (IDTV) as standard, Sony is hoping other manufacturers will follow suit.
